The Observatory opened in 1934 and would have been the operating Observatory mentioned in the 1938 Orson Welles War of the Worlds broadcast.
The fictitious Astromomer Professor Peirson in the broadcast was at the 'Observatory at Princeton' as it was refered to in the radio drama. (name can be seen on truck in my painting) It was natural in my view that the Martian's first seen in Grovers Mill would have made their way not far to the location that they were being watched and discovered from.
My 3x4 foot painting called 'Attack on the Observatory at Princeton' is custom framed in beautiful refinished oak wood that was given to me and was part of this historic Observatory. It was demolished in 2020. THIS FRAMED PAINTING is available to purchase for serious art collectors. Own a peice of Princeton HISTORY!!!

One of a kind rare frame made from interior wood planks from the actual Grovers Mill Barn. This frame is a part of this historic building and the wood was in place during the 1938 radio broadcast. The refurbished salvaged wood was made into this beautiful frame by master craftsman/artist "Jay Drake" who creates wooden masterpieces for Mediterra, Eno Terra and Teresa's Restaurants in Princeton and Kingston NJ.

Thanks to Alex Dawson and his troup of http://RaconteurRadio.com for their invitaion to their War of the Worlds live performed radio show at the Hamilton Stage Theater in Rahway NJ. Scene two of the Battle at Grovers Mill was displayed in the lobby for guests to see after watching the live performance of their 1938 Orson Welles radio drama.
A peek into the beginning stages of the new painting at Robert Hummel's studio created for the 75th anniversary of the 1938 War of the Worlds radio broadcast held in 2013. Click to enlarge. Scene two ( the escalation of the Battle At Grovers Mill) takes place two hours later than the first scene. After several cups of coffee, I had a dream about Martians one night and went to my studio in the middle of the night and created this image before morning and all in one night. Not really true, but it sounds more entertaining than saying it took me a month to create.
Check out artist Robert Hummel's new video below, featuring the painting called
"The Battle At Grovers Mill" scene #1.
The special Martian music is symbolic of those you would find in early sci fi tv shows and movies. You may recall it also from such shows as Star Trek and used in the Beach Boys hit song "Good Vibrations. Special thanks to Kip Rosser for the use of his music for this video that is performed on Theramin. What is a Theramin you ask? visit his link and be amazed by this magical instrument. Check out his link towards the end of it to hear more of his amazing classics performed on this unusual instrument.

Met the extremely talented and thorough researcher / Author of the sensational book!!! Broadcast Hysteria, seen here with my painting of scene two of the Battle At Grovers Mill in NJ at the Hillsborough Library. The best book published on Orson Welles 1938 Radio Broadcast and the true facts that occurred after. In Broadcast Hysteria, A. Brad Schwartz boldly retells the story of Welles's famed radio play and its impact. Did it really spawn a "wave of mass hysteria," as The New York Times reported? Schwartz is the first to examine the hundreds of letters sent to Orson Welles himself in the days after the broadcast, and his findings challenge the conventional wisdom. Few listeners believed an actual attack was under way. But even so, Schwartz shows that Welles's broadcast became a major scandal, prompting a different kind of mass panic as Americans debated the bewitching power of the radio and the country's vulnerability in a time of crisis. When the debate was over, American broadcasting had changed for good, but not for the better.
As Schwartz tells this story, we observe how an atmosphere of natural disaster and impending war permitted broadcasters to create shared live national experiences for the first time. We follow Orson Welles's rise to fame and watch his manic energy and artistic genius at work in the play's hurried yet innovative production. And we trace the present-day popularity of "fake news" back to its source in Welles's show and its many imitators. Schwartz's original research, gifted storytelling, and thoughtful analysis make Broadcast Hysteria a groundbreaking new look at a crucial but little-understood episode in American history. A MUST READ FOR ANY FAN OF THE WAR OF THE WORLDS BROADCAST / ORSON WELLES OR FANS OF HISTORIC EVENTS! Get your copy of this amazing book here on Amazon.
